The 2nd Nature Trap
Many of you may have heard the saying that you must train continuously until your techniques become 2nd nature. Let's think about that for a second and figure out exactly what that means. While I understand the intention, the implication is that your training is meant to be in place of your first/original nature. From our perspective and experience here at KRM Tactical, there is one fatal flaw with that approach.
This works well under a competitive setting where there are rules and officials overlooking the contest in order to ensure the safety of the competitor. However in a self-defense/combative situation there are far more variables and far less in terms of safety precautions to protect you. Statistics are clear, and most self-defense situations are ambush attacks, often involve weapons and rarely happen in ideal settings. You will often be caught in confined spaces, with obstacles in the environment. It may be between two cars, in a bathroom stall, a hallway, or somewhere with chairs or tables around you. You may find yourself on uneven ground, a wet floor, or rocky surface. All of these things are real variables that you may encounter in a self-defense scenario.
Under highly stressful situations, we enter the "fight or flight" response, which enhances certain regions of the brain. If the stress is high enough, it will temporarily "turn off" other regions of the brain. The parts of the brain that are activated during this period is the limbic system which includes the thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala and other parts of the brain that are typically part of the automatic (so involuntary) responses. Along with this, the sensory cortex is enhanced so that our awareness becomes heightened.
Our Natural Instincts
Here's a fun experiment. Every day for the next 7 days, take a rolled up pair of socks and throw it at a friend or family member's face (playfully of course). Some may take a few times, others will respond immediately, but they will all throw their hands up to avoid getting hit. Miraculously, nobody has to teach you to have this response.
Now... that's not to say that if you were attacked that this would be enough to manage the situation. My point here is that we do not need to replace our natural instinct.
Instead, what would happen if you were to learn how to use your natural instincts effectively?
Bridging the Gap Between Instinct and Training
Because our limbic system and natural instincts are focused on our ability to survive, we should base our training on a way that uses this natural response as its starting point.
That way, instead of working hard to replace an instinct that is present in virtually all living things since the beginning of intelligent life, we learn to harness this powerful impulse.
All of our programs at KRM Tactical are developed around this idea, which has proven to be extremely effective. For example, in our Dynamic Action Response Training - DART we have drills that enable us to measure just how effective the attendees are at defending against sudden violent assaults. On average, the success rate has been roughly 20%, whether the attendee has previous training or not. Afterwards, the same drill is performed, and the average percentage is up to 90%!
This is HUGE!!!!
Understand, if a woman is attacked by a male, it is almost a certainty that the man will be much larger and stronger than the woman, and there is no doubt that a severe presence of fear will trigger the biological fight or flight response. So for a woman to prevail against an assault would REQUIRE the training to have an effective and reliable bridge from the involuntary instinctive response and a trained response.
Without this bridge, no matter how sophisticated the training might be... it simply won't show up to the "event". The learned responses are stored in regions of the brain that are essentially “shut off” during a severe “fight or flight” response. Meaning, you won't be able to access any of that training.
Now, I would love to tell everyone that the answer is to train with us at KRM Tactical. While this is certainly a good option, potentially saving lives is far more important to us. Knowledge is power, and with this knowledge, you have the power to greatly increase your chances of prevailing when the proverbial "shit" hits the fan.

What Is The Basic Premise Of WASP?
What is our goal?
WASP aims to provide high percentage, actionable capabilities learned in a short time for cross gender attacks. Specifically, WASP is designed to survive one of two threats: assaults or abductions. The program does this by maximizing chances of survival, while minimizing the chances of becoming a target. Flashy, complicated moves and sensationalistic rhetoric have nothing to do with WASP. Statistically sound skill sets and scenario training based on known Predator/Abductor threat behavior is exactly what WASP is about. It is not about trying to be bigger, stronger or more aggressive than your attacker but rather it’s all about understanding your greatest options and how to best exploit them.
The bottom line up front is: if you’re a woman you’re allowed to be attractive, professionally and financially successful as well as healthy and, if it’s your inclination, athletic. It’s ok that you’re educated and you are a person of means and substance. You can come and go to any event, at any time, at your leisure. It’s not ok that someone targets you when you’re alone or most vulnerable simply because you are a woman and you may not carry a gun, you really don’t want to spend allot of time learning complicated martial arts or you don’t have a military grade understanding of threat analysis to better insure your safety or wellbeing.
Basically the nuts and bolts is all about addressing real scenarios that are backed by statistics, and formulating instinctive training programs to work with a persons instinctive responses vs a trained response. This is important because a trained response absent of an instinctive basis will inevitably fail under pressure. Memorized techniques fail if the situation surpasses one's comfort level or confidence in that technique. Our program is not about how to do more things with more toys, but how to be more efficient with less things, based on instinctive responses that exist beyond our decision making process. That way they hold under pressure. With that in place, the toys/tools are extensions of the same, only with unique attributes specific to the tool.
